Laboratory Safety Training (9:30 am to 4:30 pm)

Effective Professional Development in Math and Science--PED Math and Science Bureau (9:30 am to 4:30 pm)
This session will be an interactive discussion for those involved—or hoping to become involved—in providing math and science professional development for New Mexico teachers.  Participants will learn from each other about components of successful programs and strategies to evaluate the impact of professional development.  The Math and Science Bureau of the Public Education Department has provided guidelines for requesting funds allocated by the New Mexico Legislature for math and science professional development.  This will be an opportunity for those who might request future funding to have a voice in future guidelines as well as to find out what is already being offered to teachers.  There will also be time for small-group discussions about issues of particular interests to those in attendance.  Presenters:  Rick Scott, Claudia Ahlstrom, Mary Jo Daniel, NM Public Education Department - Math and Science Bureau; various professional development providers from throughout NM.

Making the Connections between Standards, Instruction and the NMSBA (12:30 pm – 4:30 pm)
This session will address how to use the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment as a tool for improved standards-based instruction.  The session will focus on constructed response items which present an opportunity for students to develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills but which also pose a significant challenge to many of our students.  Presenter:  Claudia Ahlstrom, New Mexico Public Education Department
