New Mexico Chemistry Exam

The attached letter contains all the information necessary to get started. Basically, all it takes is an email to me stating that they do want to participate and how many students will take the test. Then I will mail them ACS Local Section Chemistry exams and blank student answer forms (half page Scantron sheets). After I have received all the student answer forms (by March 28), I grade them to select the top 10 (maximum for our Section, with an ACS limit of 2 students per high school) to take the National Chemistry Olympiad (NCO) exam on April 12 at UNM.

More information about the ACS Chemistry Olympiad competition is available at www.acs.org/olympiad, and previous year exams with answer keys are posted for study purposes. Both the Local Section Chemistry exam and the NCO exam are widely considered to be excellent preparation for the AP Chemistry exam.

New Mexico Junior Academy of Science Paper Competition

Announcing the 2013 NMJAS regional paper competition: Call for student submissions!

We are currently seeking submissions for the 2013 Junior Academy of Science Paper Competition to be held on UNM campus March 14th (the night before the Regional Science Fair at UNM). This competition is open to students in grades 6-8 (Junior Division) and those in grades 9-12 (Senior Division) in the Central New Mexico Region and will be held at UNM's Johnson Center. Students write a paper of no more than 1500 words and present a PowerPoint presentation of 10 minutes or less to a panel of judges. Student work details their scientific research and so is not simply a literary review of a topic.

This is a wonderful opportunity for young scientists to write up their research and present it in front of a panel of judges and an audience of parents and friends. Winners of this regional competition can go on to compete at the state and national levels. Details of this competition can be found at the following websites:

2013-2014 School Sustainability Grants Program Announcement

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries' Environmental Education Commission (LEEC) is now accepting proposals for their 2013-2014 Sustainability Grants program. These grants are designed to encourage student learning via sustainability initiatives in EPA Region 6 K-12 schools. Proposals to be considered are those within a specific school campus that will both actively engage students and result in a more sustainable facility. Project funds are provided via a grant from the EPA Office of Environmental Education Sub-Grants Program to LDWF.

Seeking Applicants and Volunteers for the Perry Initiative Event: Albuquerque, New Mexico

We’re very excited to announce an upcoming Perry Outreach Program on Saturday, March 2 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopaedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments.

We are now seeking applicants for our Albuquerque, New Mexico program. Participants should be women in grades 10 and up with an expressed interest in science, medicine and/or engineering. We would very much appreciate if you could pass this information along to any high school principals, high school science teachers or high school students you may know. Applicants should be directed to fill out our online application in advance of the February 1 application deadline.

Revision of Next Generation Science Standards

On January 8, Achieve released the second (and final) public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). http://nextgenscience.org/ The draft will be open for comment until Tuesday, January 29.

Here are three ways that New Mexico educators can participate in the draft review:

1. Live Webinar on January 22, 4 to 5 pm, accessible through the internet.

Get an overview of the Framework for K-12 Science Education, understand how the standards are organized, and learn how to provide on-line feedback. To register, send an email to connealy@epscor.unm.edu and specify that you want to attend the live webinar. Login information will be provided after you register. Limited to 25 participants.

2. In-Person Review Session on January 24, 4 to 6 pm, NM EPSCoR, UNM South Campus, Albuquerque

At 3 p.m. Eastern today, January 8, Achieve released the second (and final) public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

In response to the Next Generation Science Standards, a press statement was released at 3 p.m. by NSTA President Karen L. Ostlund. Please take a look at the statement as well as some core messages developed around the NGSS. We encourage you to use these materials in any type of outreach in your state.

NSTA strongly encourages you and members of your organization to review the draft and provide feedback online to Achieve during the comment period, which ends January 29. Review the draft here. New Mexico FIRST® LEGO® League youth robotics event, CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers are needed for the third New Mexico FIRST® LEGO® League Championship Tournament and Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo, Saturday, Jan. 26, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Albuquerque Academy, 6400 Wyoming NE, in Albuquerque.

Drawing student teams from around the state, the FLL event includes approximately 32 teams, ages 9-14, and the Jr.FLL event includes approximately 20 teams, ages 6-9.

Volunteers may be adults or high-school students. We still have some slots open for judges, referees, and reviewers. We are especially in need of general tournament volunteers. The Bosque Education Guide is an interdisciplinary curriculum about the Middle Rio Grande Valley ecosystem. The curriculum provides classroom-based and field activities for students grades K-12. For the central activity, students construct a model of the Middle Rio Grande and then manipulate the paper and cloth pieces to demonstrate human impacts over the last two hundred years. The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Fellowship Year. The Einstein Fellowship Program is available to current K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators with a demonstrated excellence in teaching and leadership.
Selected teachers spend 11 months in Washington, D.C., sharing their expertise with STEM program directors or policy makers. Einstein Fellows may serve in a Congressional office or in one of several government agencies such as the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Fellows receive a monthly stipend and an allowance for professional travel and relocation. The fellowship year begins in late August 2013.
The goal of the Einstein Fellowship Program is to provide an opportunity for teachers to inform national policy and improve communication between the K-12 STEM education community and national leaders. The Einstein Fellowship Program was created in 1990 with support from the MacArthur Foundation; the 1994 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Act gave the DOE federal responsibility for the Program. The Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education administers the Program for the DOE Office of Science’s in partnership with the other participating federal agencies.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be currently employed full time in a public or private elementary or secondary school or school district, and must have been teaching in one or more STEM fields full time in a public or private elementary or secondary school for at least five of the last seven years.

National Congress of Science Education

The National Congress on Science Education met last week in Albuquerque, NM. The NCSE meets annually and consists of one voting delegate from each of the 94 NSTA Chapters and Associated Groups. The Congress meets to discuss issues and bring forth recommendations that may be of interest to NSTA and the science education community.

Delegates and other local leaders benefit from attending the summer congress, which provides opportunities to

Network with other science leaders from the US and Canada;
Attend leadership workshops to assist them in their association role;
Represent their members as a voting delegate;
Attend focus groups to address national issues and formulate debate and adopt resolutions;
Meet and work with the NSTA elected leaders and staff.

The majority of the Forum work by these National Science Education Leaders for 2012 focused on the “Framework for K-12 Science Education” which are being used to develop the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

The National Research Council (NRC), the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) , the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Achieve have embarked on a two-step process to develop the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

· Step One: Getting the Science Right The National Research Council began by developing the Framework for K-12 Science Education. The Framework is a critical first step because it is grounded in the most current research on science and science learning and identifies the science all K-12 students should know.

· Step Two: States Developing Next Generation Science Standards In a process managed by Achieve, states will lead the development of K-12 science standards, rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally-benchmarked science education. The NGSS will be based on the Framework and will prepare students for college and careers.

Summary:Young Explorers Summer Camp Instructors are hired as contractors to teach the camp program offered by the Museum. Lu Boren, Middle School Teacher, St. Columba School, Durango, CO

Lu Boren teaches earth science, chemistry, life science, and other subjects to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at St. Columba School in Durango, CO. She uses environmental topics and PLT activities to wholly engage her students in their learning, for example through studies of forest management, fire ecology, and water quality, which has had a direct impact on students’ interest in science and environmental studies. Her enthusiasm and approach also inspires fellow educators to get students involved in environmental stewardship and service-learning projects. Through her efforts, St. Columba became a PLT GreenSchool in 2011. She was honored as Outstanding PLT Educator in Colorado in 2009.

Organizational Overview:

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center in Los Alamos, New Mexico is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and responsible part-time educator to teach school and afterschool programs throughout the school year. Our educators use hands-on, experiential, and inquiry-based methods, to help program participants develop a deeper connection with the natural world in their schoolyards and beyond. This is a 10-month position, from August, 2012-May, 2013.

Essential Functions:

· Teach innovative, standards-based, hands-on, natural science education programs in both classroom and outdoor settings at PEEC, local schools, and offsite locations to groups of Pre-K through 12th grade children, following best practices. Types of programs include, but are not limited to, nature clubs, field science, outdoor survival etc.

· Learn our environmental education curriculum and implement the purpose, goals and objectives of each program.

· Help to develop new programsundefinedcome up with ideas, and write common-core standards- based curriculum.

· Teach programs independently and as part of a team.

· Independently create and stick to a complex schedule of school visits

· Communicate effectively and develop a rapport with public school teachers for scheduling and program assessments.

· Manage large and small groups of children effectively, while creating a safe, fun learning atmosphere.

Our ideal candidate will be:

· Energetic and hardworking; excited about sharing nature and the outdoors with children.

· Knowledgeable about effective teaching techniques for outdoor education.

· Experienced in designing, writing, teaching and evaluating environmental education curricula, lesson plans and activities tied to common core curriculum standards.

· Experienced in teaching kids of all ages in formal and informal settings

· An independent, self-starter; responsible.

· Degreed from an accredited college or university in environmental education, natural science, outdoor recreation or related field, or have equivalent experience.

· Organized, and able to juggle complicated schedules. A good communicator.

· Able to work both independently and on a team with minimal supervision.

A Caveat: Los Alamos is a small town surrounded by trails and nature. Most businesses close at 8 p.m., and the town is quiet, with limited shopping opportunities and activities for people in the 18-30 age range. The closest larger town is Santa Fe, about 45 minutes away. Be prepared for a quiet life if you are considering relocating to Los Alamos for this position.

                The Sierra Club is looking for a community organizer, based in Albuquerque, NM who can strengthen our organizing campaign work in the state. This Associate Organizing Representative will work to achieve the goals of our Resilient Habitats campaign in New Mexico, an effort to protect the state’s large and vast wild lands and wildlife habitat. He/she will have the opportunity to recruit, engage, and motivate volunteers to accomplish our ambitious conservation goals for protecting New Mexico's natural resources.
                The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience with grassroots organizing, training and motivating volunteers, coalition building, and lobbying. Fluency in Spanish is A big plus because many coalition partners and volunteers will speak Spanish. Candidates must have access to a vehicle because the position involves frequent travel to all corners of the state.

The Wild Rivers Program Director will direct WildEarth Guardians’ priority campaign to protect and restore the Rio Grande, ensure that river management throughout the American Southwest complies with all state and federal laws including the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act, expand the base of supporters for river flow protection in the Southwest, and outreach to new allies. The White House Council on Environmental Quality, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has announced the winners of the 2011-2012 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. Eighteen teachers from around the country are being recognized for their exceptional work as leaders in the field of environmental education in formal school settings. Award recipients and their local education agencies will receive monetary awards and commemorative plaques to help support and encourage their use of environmental education in their classrooms and schools.
